Umm Al Quwain police arrested a person (Arabic) who used social networking sites and a chatting app to blackmail and threaten others, using accounts and phone numbers from outside the country to conceal his identity.

The head of the organized crime department in Umm Al Quwain Police, Lieutenant Colonel Marwan Rashid Muhammad, said that an (Arab) person in his second decade of life was threatened with death and extortion by someone through fake accounts on the Internet and phone numbers from outside the country.

He explained that, following the information received, a team of electronic investigations was formed, and within a short period of time, it was able to determine the identity of the accused and his place of residence.

He pointed out that after taking all legal measures, he was arrested at his residence and the devices used in carrying out his criminal attempts and extorting victims were seized, and he was referred to the Criminal Investigation Department of Umm Al Quwain Police, and in turn referred him to the Public Prosecution.

Muhammad added that he must be careful not to submit to threatening messages or suspicious communications, and not to fear these criminals, or to implement what they ask, because this calls on them to persist in and harm other victims, calling on members of society to immediately report these communications and messages and not to submit to the threats of extortionists.

He pointed out that Article No. 16 of the Law on Combating Information Technology Crimes No. (5) of 2012 states that: “He shall be punished with imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years and a fine not less than 250 thousand dirhams and not exceeding 500 thousand dirhams, or one of these two penalties, "Anyone who blackmails or threatens another person to compel him to do or refrain from doing an act, using an information network or information technology means."

Muhammad affirmed the police authorities ’keenness to enhance the security and safety of society, explaining that the police elements have the ability to stand firmly in the face of crimes and their perpetrators, indicating that the police authorities are implementing security awareness campaigns aimed at alerting the seriousness of cyber crimes in general, especially extortion, as part of achieving the Ministry’s strategy The interior aims to enhance the security and safety of community members
