Dresden (dpa / sn) - The Saxon State Women's Council has warned of an increase in violence against women in the current partial lockdown and called for a legal right to a place in women's shelters.

"My experience is: When the emotional pressure increases, violence occurs more often," said the chairwoman of the association, Susanne Köhler, on Wednesday with a view to the current situation in some families.

To make matters worse, it is currently more difficult for those affected to go to counseling centers unnoticed, to report a criminal offense or to call for help via the Internet or telephone.

Because of the protection against infection, women's protection facilities should have reduced their capacities.

According to the information, about half of them had recently imposed admission freezes in Saxony.

"Experiences of violence are still part of everyday life for women," stated Minister for Equality Katja Meier (Greens).

"Crime scenes are often your own home or the close social environment: women are beaten, locked up, raped and forcibly married, also here in Saxony."

In addition, the Internet is increasingly a place of violence against girls and women.

According to Meier, around 5,200 of them were victims of domestic violence in Saxony in 2019;

more than 1,000 cases of stalking have also been reported.

"The number of unreported cases is high, according to surveys, up to 90 percent of the acts of violence are never reported."

For the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, signs should be set on Wednesday and the Ministry of Justice and the Hellerau Festival Hall should glow orange in the evening.
