Bonn (dpa / lnw) - The Rhenish beet farmers are getting a slightly smaller harvest this year than in normal years.

One reason is the dry summer, announced the Rhenish beet farmers association in Bonn.

In the Rhineland, the two sugar factories in Appeldorn and Euskirchen will work until before Christmas, the factory in Jülich according to the plan until the first few days of January.

Above-average yields are expected in the growing area in East Westphalia.

The thick tubers are transported to the factories with tractors or trucks.

The police warned drivers to be careful, because fallen beets and dirt could be on the streets.

"Beet vehicles" are posted near the factories.

The harvest is also called a campaign because the delivery times are precisely timed.

Because of the dry summer, the yield in the Rhineland this year is different: The harvest ranges from 25 to 100 tons per hectare, explained Peter Kasten, the association's managing director.

Because of the dry summer months, the campaign in the Rhineland did not start until the end of September - it was late in a long time.

The Rhineland is a cultivation area rich in tradition.
