Berlin (dpa) - The Berlin publishers AvivA, Edition Orient and Querverlag get this year's Berlin publishing award.

AvivA Verlag, which publishes books by women writers mainly from the 1920s, will receive the Grand Publishing Prize endowed with 35,000 euros, as announced by the business administration as the sponsor on Tuesday.

The Edition Orient publishing house, which publishes literature from the Arab, Persian and Turkish cultural areas, as well as the horizontal publishing house specializing in lesbian and gay literature, each receive EUR 15,000.

The prizes should be presented on Tuesday evening.

The prizes are intended to strengthen Berlin as a publishing location, explained Senator for Economic Affairs Ramona Pop (Greens) and Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer (Left). The jury also gave awards of 1,000 euros each to hochroth Berlin, the Secession Verlag and the publisher Das Kultur Gedächtnis. The publishing award has been awarded since 2018. Berlin publishers with an annual turnover of up to two million euros can apply.
