WHO director optimistic about "the end of Corona"

The Director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the news of a promising third vaccine against the emerging corona virus (Covid-19) bodes hope.

The Director-General of the Organization said in a press conference in Geneva: "With the latest positive news about the vaccine trials, the light at the end of this long dark tunnel is getting brighter."

Tedros urged governments to make sure every country has access to vaccines, and he welcomed comments in this regard from the Group of 20 major economies over the weekend.

Tedros warned that "there is now a real risk that the poorest and most vulnerable will be trampled into the scramble for vaccinations."

And after the "Pfizer / Biontech" and "Moderna" vaccines, AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford announced, on Monday, the preliminary results of the third phase of human trials on their vaccine, which showed that it is 70 to 90% effective, depending on how it is administered.

The first two vaccines also showed 95% efficacy, according to preliminary results.

The advantage of the AstraZeneca and University of Oxford vaccine is that it can be stored at lower temperatures while the other two require very low temperatures.

Russia and China are also experimenting with two nationally developed vaccines.
