After the evacuation of a migrant camp in downtown Paris, there has been massive criticism of the police's actions.

"Some of the images of the dissolution of the illegal camp for migrants on the Place de la République are shocking," wrote Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin on Tuesday night on Twitter.

He had asked the prefect of police to submit a detailed report and announced possible decisions.

With the support of aid organizations, numerous migrants pitched their tents on Monday evening in the central square in the east of Paris.

The action was a protest against the evacuation of a huge camp last week.

Aid organizations accuse the authorities of not providing the migrants with enough accommodation at the time - many became homeless after the eviction.

Videos from the eviction on Monday evening now show that the police acted very aggressively against the migrants and demonstrators.

One shot shows a migrant being simply tipped out of his tent.

The officers also used tear gas to clear the site.

“You are too violent.

We just want a roof over our heads, ”said the Afghan migrant Shahbuddin.

"We are here to show that we have nowhere to go," said the Afghan Murtasa.

Police justify their action

The police prefecture and the prefecture of the region Ile-de-France declared in a joint statement that the construction of unauthorized refugee camps was "unacceptable".

The police intervened to end the "illegal occupation of public space".

Last week, the police disbanded a refugee camp under a motorway slip road in the suburb of Saint-Denis.

Hundreds of migrants have since been without accommodation.

Such migrant camps are evacuated again and again, and a short time later new tent cities are built elsewhere - mostly northeast of Paris.

The problem is the lack of permanent housing for people.
