Potsdam (dpa / bb) - In order to keep daycare centers and schools open, Brandenburg wants to extend the range of voluntary corona rapid tests for schools and daycare centers by two months.

The state chancellery announced on Tuesday that all employees of the facilities could have themselves tested for the corona virus once in December and January.

Teachers at nursing schools now also have this test option.

Education Minister Britta Ernst (SPD) and Health Minister Ursula Nonnemacher (Greens) informed the cabinet on Tuesday.

The tests are financed from the country's corona rescue package.

The Brandenburg corona test strategy for daycare centers and schools initially provided that all employees in schools and daycare centers could be tested for the corona virus up to six times between August 1 and November 30, 2020.

The ministers said after the cabinet meeting that the extension is responding to feedback from the institutions.

They showed that the possibility of voluntary testing contributed to the reassurance and motivation of the employees in this special situation, said Nonnemacher.

Overall, however, significantly fewer people than expected actually used the tests, she added.

The extension of the test strategy should help schools and daycare centers to remain open.

The employees at schools and daycare centers were able to be tested three times, a one-time test was offered to schoolchildren and daycare children.
