Stuttgart (dpa) - According to Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), the Christmas holidays will be extended nationwide to protect against corona infections.

The prime ministers agreed on this in their talks about the corona rules, with the exception of Bremen, said Kretschmann on Tuesday in Stuttgart.

In Baden-Württemberg as in some other countries, the last day of school is December 22nd (Tuesday).

If the students were released on vacation on December 18 (Friday), they would have a stretch of five to six days until Christmas Eve that could be used to minimize contacts, said the head of government.

"You then have a whole incubation phase until Christmas."

On the other hand, Minister of Culture Susanne Eisenmann (CDU) had emphasized two weeks ago that she would not order any longer Christmas holidays nationwide. An extension could trigger organizational questions and pose problems for many parents. However, individual schools in the country are allowed to extend the Christmas vacation this year with flexible vacation days. In Baden-Württemberg there are four movable vacation days this school year.
