The future US President Joe Biden has announced the first appointments in his cabinet.

As his team announced on Monday, former US Secretary of State John Kerry will be the Biden government's climate commissioner.

It had previously been announced that Antony Blinken would become Foreign Minister.

This personality has now also been confirmed.

Kerry headed the "State Department" in the second term of US President Barack Obama from 2013 to 2017. Biden himself was Vice President in Obama's cabinet.

With the 76-year-old Kerry, Biden is handing US climate policy into the hands of a former high-ranking diplomat.

The election winner has already announced that he will rejoin the Paris climate agreement.

Biden's announcement made it clear what importance the future government wants to attach to the fight against climate change for national security.

Kerry is said to be serving on the White House's National Security Council as special envoy for climate affairs.

The future Foreign Minister Blinken has also been Biden's confidante for many years.

The 58-year-old is considered pro-European and is a staunch advocate of multilateralism.

He was one of the architects of the international nuclear agreement with Iran, which Trump canceled in May 2018.

The native New Yorker will want to improve relations with his European allies, which Trump had repeatedly offended.

Blinken already has good connections to France: He spent part of his school days in Paris, where his stepfather, a Holocaust survivor, worked as a lawyer.

The fluent French-speaking Blinken himself later worked as a lawyer in Paris.

A Latino and women in important posts

With his announcement, Bidens is also fulfilling the promise to include more women and minorities in the allocation of posts.

Alejandro Mayorkas is set to become the first Latino to hold the post of Homeland Security Minister, according to the will of Biden and the elected Vice President Kamala Harris.

Avril Haines will also be the first woman to coordinate the various US secret services as director of the intelligence services (DNI).

The Biden team also confirmed media reports that Jake Sullivan will become National Security Advisor in the White House and Linda Thomas-Greenfield will represent the US as Ambassador to the United Nations.

"We have no time to lose when it comes to our national security and foreign policy," Biden said in the press release.

"I need a team ready on day one to help me reclaim America's place at the head of the table, bring the world together for the greatest challenges we face, and advance our security, prosperity and values." The nominations must be confirmed by the Senate.
