Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Rhineland-Palatinate wants to provide the state's buildings for the construction of mobile radio technology and thus promote nationwide coverage with mobile Internet.

After a conversation with the network operators, the State Chancellery announced on Monday that Rhineland-Palatinate would be the first federal state to conclude a corresponding framework agreement with all mobile communications companies and operators of mobile communications systems.

"This will make it easier for us to expand new mobile communications sites that we need in the areas that are still underserved and for the expansion of new generations of mobile communications such as 5G," said Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD) and State Secretary for Economic Affairs Daniela Schmitt (FDP).

At what is now the fourth meeting of the "Mobile Communications Round Table", the participants took stock of their first meeting in early 2019 in a video conference. Since then, 1533 new mobile communications sites for 4G / LTE have been built in Rhineland-Palatinate, Dreyer explained.

The target agreed for the end of 2021 has already been reached.

For Deutsche Telekom, Dido Blankenburg explained that over 97 percent of households in Rhineland-Palatinate are now supplied with LTE, and by the end of the year half of the population will also have 5G.

More than 500 more new buildings are planned by the end of 2024, "and that will only work if we work closely with the public sector, the state government and the municipal institutions and the regulations for this mammoth task are simplified".

For Vodafone, Michael Jungwirth added that more and more people in rural areas of Rhineland-Palatinate are being supplied with fast internet.

Valentina Daiber from Telefónica Deutschland / o2 welcomed the opportunity to make better use of real estate in the state in the future.

The latest edition of a monitoring report by TÜV Rheinland on mobile communications shows that 95.4 percent of the state's area is covered by LTE mobile communications.

The goal remains that Rhineland-Palatinate is supplied with 4G nationwide and, based on this, with 5G, explained Dreyer.

This is essential for equal living conditions in town and country.
