Kabul (dpa) - In Afghanistan, an average of almost five children and young people have been killed or wounded every day in recent years.

A total of 26,025 under 18-year-olds were victims of the conflict in the country between 2005 and 2019, the aid organization Save the Children said on Monday.

In Afghanistan, the militant Islamist Taliban are fighting the government backed by the West.

Other terrorist organizations such as the so-called Islamic State (IS) are also active in the country and regularly carry out attacks.

Bombs hidden by the roadside pose a particular danger to civilians.

In addition to targeted killings, rural residents often get caught in the crossfire.

According to Save the Children, almost every fifth child around the world grows up in close proximity to an armed conflict.

426 million under 18-year-olds lived in conflict areas in 2019, according to a report published on Friday.

Terrorist attacks on an education center and the university in the Afghan capital Kabul in October and November killed at least 50 mostly young people.

Dozens more were injured.
