Geisa / Rasdorf (dpa) - Former Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel (CDU) will no longer be able to accept the Point Alpha Prize, which is endowed with 25,000 euros, this year.

The award ceremony planned for December 19 will be postponed again due to the ongoing corona pandemic, announced the German Unity Board of Trustees on Monday.

It should then be made up for next year.

The Point Alpha Prize has been awarded since 2005 in the memorial of the same name on the Hesse-Thuringia border.

This honors personalities who have made a special contribution to German and European unity.

Vogel was to receive this year's award on his 88th birthday on December 19, after the award ceremony, which traditionally takes place on June 17, was canceled due to Corona.

The Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) had agreed to give the laudatory speech.

Vogel was Prime Minister of Thuringia from 1992 to 2003.

Before his time in Thuringia, he was head of government of Rhineland-Palatinate from 1976 to 1988.

The 87-year-old now has a total of 23 years of reign in East and West.
