Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's parties and government paid tribute to the deceased former Prime Minister Harald Ringstorff (SPD) on Monday.

"Harald Ringstorff shaped our country and the SPD like no other - as a founding member of the SPD in Rostock, for more than 13 years as chairman of the state SPD, as economics minister and a total of six years as the SPD parliamentary group leader in the state parliament," said the SPD Group leader Thomas Krüger on Monday.

With persistence, North German charm and a down-to-earth attitude, Ringstorff has brought the country into calm waters in difficult times.

Ringstorff was head of government in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for ten years - from 1998 to 2008 - longer than any other head of government in the history of the state.

Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) praised her predecessor as “reliable, steadfast and with a subtle sense of humor”.

The fact that Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has developed very well in the thirty years since German reunification is largely due to Harald Ringstorff.

After leaving office, his life was increasingly determined by serious illness.

Nevertheless, Ringstorff was a regular guest at important events in the country.

"Personally, I would like to say: Thank you for everything, dear Harald!"

«Harald Ringstorff was a great Mecklenburg resident who had a decisive influence on the development of the state in the ten years of his tenure as Prime Minister.

Straightforward and reliable - that's how his companions remembered him, "said the left-wing group leader Simone Oldenburg.

With his down-to-earth attitude and humanity, he has earned a high reputation across party lines.

«As Prime Minister and as a parliamentarian, Harald Ringstorff was one of the defining figures in the country's history.

His commitment to the Low German language and his down-to-earth, homely style will remain unforgettable ”, noted the CDU parliamentary group leader Torsten Renz.

The chairman of the Greens in MV, Weike Bandlow, stated: "His commitment always extended beyond pure politics, among other things, his commitment to preserving the Low German language was exemplary."

«He was something that you often look for in vain today: He was a social democrat of stature.

He has my respect for his achievements as a politician.

My deepest condolences go to the bereaved, ”said the AfD parliamentary group leader Nikolaus Kramer.

Ringstorff had a decisive influence on the politics of the federal state during the fall of the wall and beyond.
