President-elect Joe Biden on Monday announced his first choices for his future government, with the crucial post of foreign minister Antony Blinken and other former members of the Barack Obama administration.

Former Secretary of State John Kerry, 76, will thus, if confirmed by the Senate, return to government as the President's special climate envoy, a sign of the importance attached to Joe Biden on this file.

The return of Iranian nuclear power

Antony Blinken, who was deputy to the Secretary of State from 2015 to 2017, will head this huge ministry, replacing Republican Mike Pompeo.

At 58, this fervent supporter of multilateralism should particularly tackle the Iranian nuclear issue as a priority.

Alejandro Mayorkas, born 60 years ago in Havana, will be the first Hispanic to head the Ministry of Homeland Security, which notably oversees immigration matters.

This son of anticastrist refugees, former federal prosecutor, knows this administration well, of which he was deputy minister from 2013 to 2016.

A representative team

"I need a team ready on day one," Joe Biden wrote in a statement announcing the appointments, while Donald Trump still refuses to concede defeat in the November 3 presidential election.

"These individuals are as experienced and crisis-tested as they are innovative and imaginative," he continued.

The president-elect, who has promised to form a team representative of the American population, also selected Avril Haines, 51, to become director of National Intelligence, a position responsible for coordinating the various federal agencies active in this field occupied only by men so far.

African-American Linda Thomas-Greenfield, a 68-year-old diplomat, who was Deputy Secretary of State for Africa, will become Ambassador to the UN.

Joe Biden has also named another close associate, Jake Sullivan, 43, as his national security adviser.
