Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - A 52-year-old in Düsseldorf was sentenced to one and a half years in prison on probation for aiding and abetting fraud in the millions with returnable bottles.

The regional court was convinced that six years ago the defendant had issued false documents to the managing director of a Neuss company for the disposal of 375 tons of metal cans and 154 tons of pet bottles.

For this he received almost 130,000 euros.

The defendant had denied the allegations to the last.

"Had they confessed, the sentence would have been noticeably milder," said the presiding judge.

The defendant's defense attorney had pointed out at the start of the trial that his client had also been investigated in Cologne, Frankfurt and Bochum.

Unlike in Düsseldorf, the proceedings there were discontinued.

A company boss from Neuss had manipulated two return machines for bottles and beverage cans and wrongly collected more than 1.8 million euros in deposit within ten months.

The plastic bottles and aluminum cans in the manipulated machines were not crushed as usual.

They were undamaged and could be pushed into the machine again and again.

The allegations against the alleged main perpetrator have already expired.
