Police and rescue services were alerted just before 9 o'clock on Sunday morning that the 55-year-old man had been attacked.

He was picked up on the beach, but his life could not be saved and he was pronounced dead on the spot, reports ABC News.

The beach is popular with tourists, but since it is low season, there were no lifeguards on duty to monitor the beach, according to Perth Now.

Eighth death this year

It is the eighth death caused by sharks this year in Australia, according to the Taronga Foundation, which keeps statistics on the number of shark attacks in the country.

Unlike other parts of Western Australia, shark attacks are rare in Broome. However, the beach is closed once or twice a year when potentially life-threatening saltwater crocodiles move along the coast.
