Man killed by shark on tourist beach in Australia

A man was killed by a shark on a very touristy beach in northwest Australia, authorities said on Sunday.

The attack occurred Sunday morning on Cable Beach, located on the northern coast of Western Australia.

After being taken out of the water and despite the intervention of the emergency services, the victim succumbed to his injuries.

In a statement, the police of that state confirmed his death "in tragic circumstances".

Shark attacks are rare at Cable Beach, a 14 mile stretch of white sand near the town of Broome.

Usually, the authorities are forced to close this beach once or twice a year due to the presence of saltwater crocodiles dangerous to humans.

This is the eighth fatal attack since the start of the year in Australia.

Over the same period, 22 shark attacks were recorded by the Taronga Conservation Society, a government agency.
