Frankfurt / Hungen (dpa / lhe) - Hessian pool attendants are demanding a guarantee for swimming pools.

The closure of the swimming pools in spring and now in autumn due to Corona as well as the implementation of hygiene measures in summer would have led to an increase in the deficit in many swimming pools, said the chairwoman of the Hessen State Association of the Federal Association of German Swimming Masters, Michaela Fisseler-Weinrich.

The association sees the danger that “there may be a wave of pool closures as a result”.

Difficult budget situations would arise for the municipalities as operators.

The association fears that there could be significant cuts in voluntary social benefits in particular and is demanding "clear operational commitments and further support for the nationwide maintenance of the pools by the state government and the municipalities".

Swimming pools should “no longer be viewed as a voluntary service by a municipality”, but “as a compulsory health care task”.

The victims of the closure are the sick and children.

“The trend is already noticeable that fewer and fewer people can swim,” added board member Maximilian Faber.

"The current situation is now further exacerbating the situation."

Since the baths were reopened in summer, baths have not been identified as drivers of the pandemic.
