12 August 2019 The conservative Alejandro Giammattei won the presidential elections in Guatemala, defeating the former first lady Sandra Torres in the ballot. With 95 percent of the votes counted, Giammattei, according to the country's Electoral Commission, obtained 59 percent of the votes. For Giammattei, 63, former head of the Guatemalan penitentiary system, it was the fifth attempt for the presidency. Giammattei succeeds the outgoing president Jimmy Morales, who under the Constitution could not stand for a new term. Torres, a left-wing candidate, ex-wife of former president Alvaro Colom, got 26 percent of the vote. The former first lady is currently under investigation for a case of illicit funding for her election campaign.
