Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - This year, cycle paths are being built and expanded on ten federal and state highways in Hessen, as well as being renovated over a length of around 9.3 kilometers.

The funds for the cycle paths on state roads are to increase from 3.7 million euros in 2019 to 17 million in 2024, said Transport Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens) in response to a small request from the FDP parliamentary group in Wiesbaden.

The financial support for the cycle paths on federal highways will increase from 4.2 million to an average of 13.5 million euros per year during the period.

Between 2013 and 2019, around 126 million euros were invested in cycle paths as well as combined sidewalks and cycle paths on state and federal highways in Hesse, and funding for municipalities was approved, said the Green politician.

Over 40 kilometers of cycle paths on federal highways were created in the country during this period.

The length of the combined footpaths and cycle paths on the country roads was over 25 kilometers.

The state road network in Hesse covers a total of around 7200 kilometers.

According to Al-Wazir, there are around 850 kilometers of cycle paths directly on the state roads, some of which can also run on both sides.

In addition, there are routes that have been expanded for cycling through the country, but which do not run directly on the state road, as well as paths that can be used by bicycle traffic on the state road.

The length of the federal highways in Hesse is around 3000 kilometers.

According to the information, there are a total of around 600 kilometers of cycle paths running directly on the federal highway.

On these routes, too, there are routes that have been expanded for bicycle traffic by the federal government, but do not run directly on the federal highway, as well as other routes that can be used by bicycle traffic on the federal highway.

According to the Minister of Transport, around 88 percent of the around 25,000 connections contained in the Hessen Cycle Route Planner are the responsibility of districts, cities and municipalities.

Strengthening cycling can therefore only be achieved through cooperation between the federal, state and local governments, stressed Al-Wazir.

The FDP parliamentary group, meanwhile, demands that more concrete projects be implemented for the construction of cycle paths and that the rural regions in Hesse in particular are taken into account.
