Reem El Desouki, an American citizen of Egyptian origin, has returned to the United States, after the Egyptian authorities released her after being arrested for many months in Egypt.

The Freedom Initiative in Washington - in a statement issued yesterday - said that the released detainee arrived at her home in Pennsylvania with her son, Mustafa (13 years).

Reem El Desouki, an Egyptian-American art teacher living in Pennsylvania, was arrested three hundred days after arriving in Cairo on July 7, 2017, with her son.

The Freedom Initiative statement stated that the Egyptian authorities did not reveal the reasons that led to her arrest.

According to reports, she was accused of managing accounts opposed to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on social media, and her son had previously appealed - in a video clip - to US President Donald Trump to intervene to secure the release of his mother.

The release of Reem El Desouki comes days after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on the Egyptian authorities to release the American citizens detained in Egypt, according to what sites concerned with the conditions of detainees in Egyptian prisons said.

Also, this step coincided with French and UN statements that included concerns about the human rights situation in Egypt, following the death of the young director Shady Habash in prison.
