According to the latest statistics issued by the Community Development Authority, the number of senior citizens registered in the "Thuker Social Club" reached 311 members, compared to 267 members during the past year 2019, at a time when the authority moved to implement all the club's activities through virtual communication channels, in the interest of safety Its members, and in compliance with preventive measures to limit the spread of Corona disease.

The Director of the Senior Citizens Department at the Authority, Maryam Al Hammadi, told "Emirates Today" that the authority had taken a decision, since the start of the pandemic, to stop all interactive activities that were present in the club throughout the year.

And it began by training senior citizens benefiting from the club's services to use smart and virtual channels, to gradually start holding activities and meetings through them.

She explained that the services provided by the club to senior citizens include organizing daily activities, events and programs concerned with cultural, social, entertainment and health aspects, with the aim of integrating them into public life and benefiting from their experiences, and helping them spend their spare time in an optimal manner, which ensures that their lives are pursued in a positive and balanced psychological and health condition.

She pointed out that the authority has intensified its efforts to work to protect the elderly citizens and residents, both healthily and psychologically, during the first weeks of the spread of the Corona pandemic, by implementing proactive measures.

Al-Hammadi reported that the authority decided to compensate them for the interactive, civilized activities through a series of cultural and entertainment programs and meetings held remotely, through virtual communication channels, with the aim of protecting them from any psychological setbacks as a result of moving away from their friends in the club, and stopping them from participating in external public activities.

She added that there is a demand among club members for virtual activities during the current period, because it keeps them in contact with the community in light of the precautionary measures currently in place.

It also encourages them to spend time and think about topics that are free of boredom and negative thoughts.

It is noteworthy that the authority managed to increase the number of senior citizens registered in the Thukher Social Club from 94 members during 2014 to 267 members during the past year, before their number continued to rise during the current year.

The Authority’s efforts are part of implementing its plans to integrate senior citizens with the rest of society by providing them with the best living and health conditions, and encouraging them to actively participate in various cultural, social and entertainment activities.

The number of senior citizens, currently registered in the system of the Community Development Authority in Dubai, is 8,155 elderly, while the number of senior residents is 657 elderly.

Senior citizens in the emirate obtain a set of health care and rehabilitation services that guarantee financial and psychological stability for them, by submitting the required documents and registering in the authority’s “Thukher” card system.
