The bombs exploded in the two pubs which were crowded ten minutes apart.

Six Northern Irishmen who had come to Birmingham to attend a funeral were arrested the same evening and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The "Birmingham Six" who claimed their innocence will be cleared after 16 years in prison.

Police had extorted their confessions and fabricated false evidence at the height

of IRA violence

against UK authorities.

The provisional IRA has also always denied its participation in these deadly attacks.

Will the arrest of this 65-year-old man finally make it possible to designate those responsible for this killing which left 21 dead and 182 wounded?

In 2016, it was shown that the police were aware of the preparation of this double attack but that they had failed to prevent it.

This new arrest may help advance the investigation.

The families of the victims have been waiting for this moment for 46 years.
