Democratic lawmakers elected Nancy Pelosi again as president of the US House of Representatives for a new term, to be - according to observers - the most powerful figure in Congress during the term of President-elect Joe Biden.

The Democratic Electoral College posted a tweet on Twitter saying, "Congratulations to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, whom the Democrats have named again to be our brave leader and speaker of the 117th House of Representatives."

Pelosi, 80, has led the Democratic Electoral College since 2003 and has been described as the main opponent of President Donald Trump.

Democrats, Majority Leader Stanny Hopper and Majority Coordinator James Claiborne, are likely to retain their second and third positions in the House in terms of hierarchy.

Official voting will take place in the House of Representatives next January after the opening session of the new Congress, and shortly before Biden takes office as the 46th president of the United States.
