England, worn by two-time goalscorer and assisting passer Phil Foden, beat Iceland 4-0 on Wednesday at Wembley in a no-stakes Nations League game, with both sides already eliminated before this final matchday.

Third in their group behind the Belgians, first and qualified for the "Final 4", and the Danes second, the English ended the competition on a high note after their setback against the Red Devils on Sunday (2-0).

Last and already relegated to League B since October, the Icelanders end up with a sixth defeat in as many games, a week after failing to qualify for the next Euro, during the dam against Hungary (2-1).

In an empty Wembley stadium due to a pandemic, the meeting began with a tribute to the former England goalkeeper of great Liverpool of the 70s and 80s, Ray Clemence (61 caps), who died on November 15 at the age of 72 years.

Mason Mount (21), Declan Rice (21) and especially Phil Foden (20): the very young midfield line aligned by Gareth Southgate gave the Three Lions a big victory.

Rice opened the scoring with a header following a free kick from Foden (20th).

Mount doubled the bet with a strike from the left after a shift from captain Harry Kane (24th).

Like Rice, Foden opened his international goal counter with a brace late in the game (80th and 84th), while the English played in numerical superiority after the exclusion of defender Birkir Saevarsson for a second yellow card (54th).

The young Manchester City midfielder celebrated in the best possible way his return to the selection for the end of the League of Nations, after being sidelined, along with striker Mason Greenwood, for violating anti-measures. Covid in early September.
