November 18, 2020 - Germany has expressed "concern" over the US administration's decision to further cut the contingent deployed in Afghanistan, fearing that it could have consequences for the country's peace process.

The German government fears the impact the announced reduction of US troops in January 2021 could have.

"We are particularly concerned about what the American announcement could mean for the progress of peace talks in Afghanistan," said the minister of affairs. Foreign Heiko Maas at a press conference.

Trump intends to swiftly withdraw US troops from the Asian country, an announcement that has caused great concern among many of NATO's allies.

The former head of the Pentagon, Mark Esper, was also opposed to the idea, ousted by the outgoing US president a few days after the November 3 elections.

For his part, the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, said yesterday that a hasty NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan would have a "very high price", with the risk of turning this country back into "a base for international terrorists" .
