Question: Hang Lu Yi: the Korean War, three brush with death

To the south of Jincheng, there is a strategic highland called Jiaoyan Mountain.

It was here that Yi Luheng faced the threat of death on the Korean battlefield for the last time.

It was also here that he was awarded the title of "People's Hero".

On July 13, 1953, the Jiaoyanshan battle started, which was a crucial battle in the Battle of Jincheng.

Jiaoyan Mountain is 700 meters above sea level. It overlooks the area north of Jinchengchuan and west of the North Han River. The mountain is steep and easy to defend and difficult to attack. It is the core position of the South Korean Army in the Jincheng area.

About two weeks after the volunteers captured Jiaoyan Mountain, the armistice agreement was signed at Panmunjom, and peace was firmly nailed to the 38th line.

In the battle at Jiaoyan Mountain, Yi Luheng's task was to lead the entire class of 12 soldiers to blow up the enemy's 5 dark forts and remove obstacles for the large forces to charge.

Before getting close to the enemy's dark fort, Yi Luheng's left pinky was blown away.

"In the beginning, the machine gunner covered us, but suddenly our machine gun stopped. I looked back and the machine gun was interrupted by the enemy."

Enduring the severe pain, Yi Luheng continued to move forward, struggling to stuff the blasting tube into the enemy's machine gun.

"Pulling out the detonating rope and rolling sideways, I lost consciousness." Yi Luheng recalled.

Waking up again, Yi Luheng was already lying in the hospital bed.

"At this time I learned that all 12 people in our class and the machine gunner who covered me had died. At that time, the oldest in our class was the deputy squad leader, who was only 23 years old."

On the Korean battlefield, Yi Luheng also experienced two escapes.

The first time was during the march and was almost washed away by flooding.

After being rescued by a comrade-in-arms, Yi Luheng felt afraid: "Only this time I felt scared. At other times, there is no time to be afraid or not. There is no time to think on the battlefield."

"The second time was when I was a guard to save my old North Korean mother." In October 1952, Sanyangli, Huaiyang County, where Yi Luheng was located, was suddenly attacked by an enemy bomber and Yi Luheng rushed into the fire. Li rescued the North Korean mother and her two-year-old granddaughter.

Because he gave the old North Korean mother the wet bedding for fire prevention, Yi Luheng was burned with blood blisters all over his body. He was sent to the hospital for rescue for 9 hours before he recovered.

Later, the "Korean People's Daily" reported the incident on December 6 with the title "Making Real Steel by Fire", praising Yi Luheng as "a good son and daughter of China."

This "good son" was only 15 years old when he joined the army in March 1951.

"Seven people from the same township, we went alive and kicking together, and I was the only one who came back. Behind every sacrificed comrade, there is a family paying for it. If it weren't for these young people and their families, how could we keep our country." Yi Lu Heng said.

In one of his family letters, Yi Luheng once imagined the situation after the victory in the War of Resistance against U.S. Aid Korea:

"We will surely drive U.S. imperialism out of North Korea and achieve a full victory in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. At that time, I will return home to reunite with my family, work together, live a good life, and help the villagers live a new life with adequate food and clothing , I want everyone to get rich and build a good hometown, with roads, reservoirs and power stations, tea mountain fruit trees, pasture factories, buildings, electric lights, telephones..."

Now, these wishes have been realized.
