November 17, 2020The Chinese President, Xi Jinping, has warned not to use the Covid-19 pandemic to favor a process of "de-globalization" which will only result in damaging common interests.

This was stated in his video speech at the opening of the BRICS summit, the acronym that brings together the emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, hosted virtually by Russia.

Using the pandemic for "de-globalization" or "economic decoupling" and for the creation of "parallel systems", Xi said, will only harm common interests.

"In the present circumstances", he continued, "we must firmly build an open world economy and oppose the abuse of protectionism in the name of national security."

Climate: China defends the Paris Agreement

The Covid-19 pandemic will not stop global warming and China will assume its responsibilities against climate change based on its level of development.

This was stated by the Chinese president, Xi Jinping.

"We must achieve harmony between man and nature. And global warming will not stop because of the epidemic, and the response to climate change cannot be relaxed," Xi said.

The Chinese president said it was necessary to "respect the Paris Agreement on the basis of the principle of common responsibility", an agreement from which the US officially withdrew two weeks ago.

"China - added Xi - is willing to assume its responsibilities at the international level in line with its level of development".

The Chinese president reiterated that Beijing will strive to reach the peak of polluting emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
