Top ten cities in northern GDP in the first three quarters: two cities exceed one trillion yuan, Zhengzhou catches up with Tianjin

Currently, the top ten cities in the northern region by GDP are Beijing, Tianjin, Qingdao, Zhengzhou, Jinan, Xi'an, Yantai, Xuzhou, Tangshan and Dalian.

In recent years, my country's north-south economy has divided significantly.

In the northern region, the region also showed a state of differentiation.

Judging from the three quarterly reports of major cities, the current top ten cities in the North by GDP are Beijing, Tianjin, Qingdao, Zhengzhou, Jinan, Xi'an, Yantai, Xuzhou, Tangshan and Dalian.

The list is the same as last year's top ten cities in northern GDP, but in terms of specific rankings, Tangshan, which was originally tenth, rose to ninth, while Dalian, which was originally ninth, dropped to tenth.

Beijing stands out, Zhengzhou and Qingdao catch up with Tianjin

In the northern region, Beijing is far ahead.

Statistics show that in the first three quarters, Beijing’s GDP exceeded 2.5 trillion yuan, leading the second place, Tianjin, with over 1.5 trillion yuan.

From a national perspective, Beijing's GDP ranked second in the first three quarters, and it is also the only city in the north that ranks among the top ten in the country.

After Beijing, Tianjin’s GDP in the first three quarters exceeded one trillion yuan, reaching 109.5 billion yuan; Qingdao and Zhengzhou are both trying to catch up, and are in the 800 billion yuan echelon; Jinan and Xi’an, the two sub-provincial cities, rank fifth and sixth respectively. , Are in the 700 billion yuan echelon.

The seventh to ninth places are three ordinary prefecture-level cities-Yantai, Xuzhou and Tangshan. These three prominent manufacturing cities and Dalian in the northeast are all in the 500 billion yuan echelon.

Generally speaking, these cities are still far away from Jinan and Xi'an.

Of course, the annual data can better measure the overall strength of the city.

Judging from the data in 2019, 4 of the northern cities have GDP exceeding the trillion mark, accounting for only 23.5% of the country (17).

The four cities are Beijing, Tianjin, Qingdao, and Zhengzhou. Among them, Beijing, Tianjin, and Zhengzhou are all national central cities, and Qingdao is a sub-provincial city and a city separately designated in the state plan.

In the whole year of last year, Beijing achieved a regional GDP of 3537.13 billion yuan. Tianjin, the second largest in the north, exceeded 2.1 trillion yuan. The difference even exceeded the GDP of Suzhou, the sixth nationwide last year.

Not only that, Beijing is far ahead in the northern region in terms of indicators such as the size of the permanent population, total capital, the number of high-tech enterprises, and foreign trade imports and exports.

In 2019, Tianjin’s GDP was 1,410.428 billion yuan, ranking second in the north and tenth in the country.

However, in the first three quarters of this year, Tianjin was surpassed by Nanjing, and has dropped to 11th place.

Niu Fengrui, a researcher at the Urban Development and Environment Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, analyzed to a reporter from China Business News that Tianjin’s surpassing by Nanjing is related to the overall environment. In recent years, the economic development of North and South has divided, and the growth rate of North China has been slow; on the other hand, Tianjin It is also facing greater pressure from environmental protection. It is a heavy and chemical industrial city in itself, and faces great pressure from structural adjustments.

Not only that, Tianjin also faces the possibility of continuing to be caught up.

In the northern region, the GDP of Qingdao and Zhengzhou both exceeded 1.1 trillion yuan last year. The two cities are expected to further narrow the gap with Tianjin in the future.

In Niu Fengrui's view, the gap between Qingdao and Tianjin is relatively small, but from the economic hinterland, Zhengzhou may have a better chance of surpassing Tianjin.

Tianjin has an area of more than 10,000 square kilometers and is a seaport city, but the surrounding radius and hinterland are smaller.

In contrast, Zhengzhou is the provincial capital of Henan. Henan is the province with the largest registered population in my country and is also the core area of the Central Plains.

As the center of land transportation, Zhengzhou is becoming a logistics center.

In terms of trends, Zhengzhou's development trend is better than that of Tianjin in recent years.

Professor Geng Mingzhai, the honorary dean of the School of Economics of Henan University, analyzed to the China Business News reporter that in the future, Zhengzhou is very likely to surpass Tianjin and become the second largest city in the north.

Zhengzhou is the largest transportation hub in the entire northern inland region and has the widest hinterland.

With the advent of a smooth internal circulation and consumption-driven growth, Zhengzhou's two major advantages will inevitably drive the continuous, large-scale aggregation of factors and the expansion of the city.

In contrast to Tianjin, the advantages of the hub and hinterland are gradually being diluted by Beijing and other coastal ports and many inland cities.

After the four trillion-dollar GDP club cities, Jinan and Xi'an, the two sub-provincial capital cities, both had a GDP of 900 billion yuan last year, becoming the reserve army of trillion-dollar clubs.

This year, the GDP of these two cities is likely to exceed one trillion yuan. In particular, these two cities have been in the process of accelerating the expansion and strengthening of their provincial capitals in recent years, and their ability to gather resource elements has been continuously enhanced.

Among them, Xi'an is the only city in the current nine national central cities whose GDP has not exceeded the trillion mark.

In the first three quarters of this year, Xi’an’s GDP reached 707.531 billion yuan, an increase of 4.5%, and fixed asset investment increased by 12.9%. The growth rates of both indicators are leading the sub-provincial cities.

On January 5 this year, the Jinan Municipal Party Committee’s Economic Work and "Four Centers" Construction Promotion Conference was held. At the meeting, the "Jinan Three-year Action Plan for Building a National Central City (2020~2022)" was issued, proposing that Jinan should accelerate the promotion of comprehensive Construction of transportation hubs, strengthen transportation links with cities, and create an efficient and convenient “one-hour metropolitan area”; promote the construction of urban agglomerations on the lower Yellow River, promote the docking and cooperation between the Jinan metropolitan area and the Zhengzhou metropolitan area; fully open up settlement restrictions, and build a national urban-rural integration development In the pilot area, a comprehensive national science center will be established; a cluster of intelligent manufacturing industries will be built.

Only 1 city in Tohoku was shortlisted

Among the top ten in the north, the Yellow River Basin occupies 5 seats, namely Xi'an, Zhengzhou, Jinan, Qingdao and Yantai. Although there are 4 sub-provincial cities in the Northeast, only Dalian is in the top ten, ranking tenth.

Data show that last year, Shenyang’s GDP was 647.03 billion yuan, ranking 11th in the north and 32nd in the country; Changchun’s GDP was 590.41 billion yuan, ranking 12th in the north and 34th in the country; Harbin’s GDP was 524.94 billion yuan, ranking 15th in the north. , No. 42 in the country.

Yi Baozhong, a professor at the Northeast Asian Research Institute of Jilin University, analyzed to a reporter from China Business News that the number of Northeast cities in the top ten in the north is relatively small, mainly due to the local economic situation.

In the past few years, the total economic growth of the Northeast has been relatively slow, and the regional economy is relatively small, and its ability to support large cities is insufficient.

Although there are four sub-provincial cities in the Northeast, there has never been a central city with a relatively high concentration and a core leading role like the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta.

Yibaozhong said that the four sub-provincial cities in the northeast are mainly supported by the original old industrial foundations, mainly manufacturing.

The high-end production factors are mainly concentrated in the modern service industry. The central cities of the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta are all prominent in the tertiary industry, especially finance and service trade, and they have a particularly strong ability to drive radiation.

In contrast, several sub-provincial cities in the Northeast have relatively weak capabilities to support, drive and spread the regional economy.

Niu Fengrui said that with the adjustment of my country’s industrial structure in recent years, the contradictions inherent in Northeast China that restrict economic development have become prominent. The original structure dominated by heavy and chemical industries with a particularly high proportion of state-owned enterprises is now largely restricting the development of Northeast China. .

In addition, although the four sub-provincial cities in Northeast China have abundant resources for higher education, including a number of famous universities such as Harbin Institute of Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Jilin University, and Northeastern University, such advantages in higher education have not been transformed into advantages in science and technology.

Yibaozhong said that this is because the transformation of results requires a suitable soil environment for development.

The industrial structure and economic structure of the Northeast are characterized by state-owned enterprises and manufacturing industries, and lack a system that can truly connect technology and the market.

In the southeast coast, technology development and application are supported by a complete market system, so many research results in the northeast are transferred to the southeast coast.

3 ordinary prefecture-level cities with outstanding manufacturing industries

Among the top ten northern cities, there are 3 ordinary prefecture-level cities-Yantai, Xuzhou and Tangshan, all of which are prefecture-level cities with prominent manufacturing industries.

Among them, before Jinan merged with Laiwu, Yantai was the second largest city in Shandong's GDP after Qingdao.

The heavy industry city Tangshan has been the city with the largest GDP in Hebei for many years.

Niu Fengrui said that these cities are local regional central cities. Although they do not have the function of radiating the whole province, they have local radiating effects. For example, Xuzhou is located at the junction of Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan and Anhui and is the central city of the entire Huaihai region; Tangshan is a Chinese city. The old industrial base has a relatively good foundation for development; the area where Yantai is located is a place with a relatively high level of development and an earlier opening to the outside world.

"It's not surprising that these three places are in the top ten."

These manufacturing cities are also facing the problem of how to further transform and upgrade. For example, the number of high-tech enterprises in Yantai and Xuzhou are only 635 and 738, respectively, which is a large distance from similar cities in the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta. .

Looking to the future, Tangshan is located in the core area of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration. In the process of further docking with Beijing, it is expected to achieve industrial upgrading; for Xuzhou and Yantai, it is necessary to further upgrade the city's energy level and enhance the central city agglomeration of resources. Ability to enhance the ability to drive and lead the surrounding areas.
