November 16, 2020In October, the prices of the so-called shopping cart with food, home and personal care products increased by 1.2% compared to the same month last year.

In September they had marked + 1%.

Istat confirms the surge in fresh food prices.

In particular, the prices of fresh or chilled vegetables went from -0.5% to + 5.3% while those of fresh fruit increased by 9.9% on an annual basis.

"Even in October, inflation net of the more volatile components, including that of energy - characterized by the persistence of negative price trends - while accelerating, remains modest", comments Istat.

The trend data show an acceleration in the prices of unprocessed food goods (from + 2.7% in September to + 3.5%) and a lesser extent of the decrease, which remains strong, in those of regulated energy (from -13 , 6% to -7.2%).

On the other hand, the decline was accentuated by the prices of non-regulated energy goods (from -8.2% to -9.4%). The "core inflation", net of energy and fresh food and that net of energy goods only both accelerate, respectively from + 0.1% to + 0.2% and from + 0.2% to + 0.5%.

The cyclical increase in the general index is mainly due to the growth of regulated energy goods (+ 10.5%) and, to a lesser extent, those of unprocessed food goods (+ 0.9%), only partially offset by drop in the prices of transport services (-1.1%).

City-by-city inflation

Venice, Milan and Rome are the three cities with the lowest inflation in October.

The rate is -1.4%, -1.2% and -1% respectively.

At the opposite end of the Istat ranking, on the capitals of the regions and autonomous provinces and municipalities with more than 150 thousand inhabitants, the highest inflation is observed in Bolzano (+ 1%), Perugia (+ 0.7%) and Trento (+ 0.6%).

Overall, the cities with negative inflation are 19 out of 30.
