The city of Benghazi, eastern Libya, is witnessing a security chaos after the increase in assassinations, kidnappings, armed robbery, theft and extortion carried out by gunmen affiliated with the forces of retired Major General Khalifa Haftar.

At the beginning of this month, Haftar formed a security room for the city of Benghazi, headed by one of his close associates, Abdul Razzaq Al-Nadhouri, and the membership of the Minister of Interior of the parallel interim government, and other security forces to control the security of Benghazi.

Finally, the lawyer, Hanan al-Baraasi, known as “Azzouz Barqa”, was assassinated in “Twenty” Street in Benghazi. An armed militia tried to kidnap her daughter, Hanin, in addition to an attempt by masked gunmen to kidnap Abd al-Hamid al-Safi, advisor to the Speaker of Tobruk Parliament, and the Endowment Authority announced the kidnapping of the head of the Mosques Department, Ayman al-Darsi. .

Among the crimes recorded in the city of Benghazi since the beginning of last October:

- The body of citizen Khalifa Chico was found in Al-Sabri area.

- The kidnapping of the young man, Sofyan Ferjani, by an armed militia.

- Attempt to assassinate Brigadier General Nasser Al-Dorsi of the Petroleum Facilities Guard.

- A criminal investigation force in Benghazi attacked the house of businessman Hamida Al-Jazwi for not paying the agency.

Assaulting the properties, real estate and lands of citizens in the city.

The security authorities in Benghazi did not announce the arrest of any armed men after committing these crimes in the city.

And the tribes of (Asheibat, Zawiya, Al-Awaqeer, Al-Fakhir, and Al-Barasa) declared - in separate statements - their condemnation of the incidents of kidnapping, murder, theft and assault on property against members of the tribes in Benghazi.

Military experts and human rights experts believe that these repeated crimes are usually recorded against unknown people due to the dependence of criminals to power centers behind Haftar, as it is easy for the security services to track down the criminals due to the occurrence of crimes in crowded streets with passers-by in broad daylight and are photographed by surveillance cameras.

Analysts add that Haftar seeks to show that Benghazi is still under his control after his failure to enter the capital, Tripoli, and the repercussions of the great loss on his supporters, who began an armed struggle for influence in the city of Benghazi to kill, kidnap and blackmail opponents of Haftar.

Assassination of women in Benghazi, the

deputy head of the Women’s Support and Empowerment Unit in the Government of National Accord, Hanan al-Fakhiri, denounced the continuation of the series of assassination of women for various reasons in Benghazi, the latest of which was the human rights defender, Hanan al-Barasi.

Al-Fakhiri told Al-Jazeera Net, "Hanan Al-Barassi is not the first woman and will not be the last. She was assassinated, like her predecessors, in order to silence those who want to say the word of truth or reject actions that limit his freedom of expression."

She added, "Among the reasons for committing these crimes against women is the difference of opinion with those who violate human rights and their attempt to convey the voice of the oppressed to those responsible."

Al-Fakhiri called on the local and international competent authorities to punish the perpetrators, and to inflict the maximum punishment against them so that they may be an example to others.

Expected result:

The military expert, Adel Abdel Kafi, said that the increase in the rate of crime and extrajudicial killing is an expected result after the loss of Haftar's project in western Libya and its failure to control Tripoli.

Abdel Kafi added, "Haftar is the one who planted the culture of killing outside the rule of law, kidnapping and assassination among those criminals who belong to his armed militias after he used them brutally in his futile wars, and contributed to feeding the spirit of killing and blood in them under the pretext of fighting terrorism."

In a statement to Al-Jazeera Net, Abdul Kafi indicated that the struggle for influence, power and money between Haftar's militia over the city of Benghazi will appear more in the coming days, especially in light of a tense tribal situation.

Abdel Kafi explained that the failure of the authorities to control criminals in eastern Libya means the presence of armed groups that represent a national threat to the country, which requires many years to reintegrate them into Libyan society.

Impunity The

director of Biladi Organization for Human Rights, Tariq Lamlum, believes that the flames of revenge and harming opponents will not be extinguished in Benghazi unless there is a real desire to address the culture of impunity.

Lamlum added to Al-Jazeera Net, "The killing of lawyer Hanan Al-Barasi was not surprising, although it was shocking. It is unfortunate that a woman was killed in broad daylight at a time when the parties to the conflict in Libya are sitting to find a basis for dialogue, as human rights activists and activists made recommendations in the political dialogue sessions, including the necessity. Ending the state of impunity. "

"It seems that local tools will be difficult for them to decide on such crimes, as the perpetrators and suspects have money, power and power in some cases," he said.

He stated that the national interest requires that the perpetrators of serious crimes be brought to justice, and guarantees are put in place for accountability through national courts or an international mechanism.

Armed groups in Benghazi The

head of the National Committee for Human Rights, Ahmed Hamza, accused the armed groups in Benghazi of committing criminal acts, the most recent of which was the assassination of lawyer Al-Barasi, who was critical of outlaws.

In his statement to Al-Jazeera Net, Hamza attributed the reasons for the security chaos in Benghazi to the security chaos in Benghazi, and the presence of irregular and uncontrolled armed groups under the cover of the authorities in eastern Libya.

The spokesman believes that all the brutal criminal acts fall within the framework of suppressing freedom of expression and opinion and silencing dissenting voices rejecting corruption, human rights violations and violence in the east of the country, and the policy of silencing voices.

Hamza held the security authorities in eastern Libya fully responsible for these heinous crimes, after the utter failure to protect citizens and their property from outlaws in Benghazi.
