Nearly 80% of Americans, including more than half of Republicans, acknowledge that President-elect Joe Biden is the winner in the November 3 election after most media outlets have decided the race for the Democratic candidate based on his superiority in critical states, according to a Reuters poll / Ipsos.

Biden, who needed 270 electoral college votes to win, received 279 votes against 214 of those votes for Republican President Donald Trump, while results were incomplete in three states, according to the Edison Research Center.

Biden won the popular vote with 76.3 million votes, or 50.7% of the total vote, against 71.6 million votes for Trump, or 47.6% of the vote.

A nationwide poll conducted by Reuters / Ipsos from Saturday afternoon through Tuesday found that 79 percent of American adults believed Biden had won the White House.

13% said the election result has not yet been decided, 3% said Trump was the winner, and 5% said they did not know.

The poll results were distributed somewhat according to party affiliations: About six in ten Republicans said Biden won, while the Democrats were nearly unanimous in his victory.

The Edison Research Center, which polls those who voted for Reuters and major media outlets, decided the race for Biden on Saturday after he expanded his lead over Trump in Pennsylvania and appeared to be on his way to amass the 270 votes he needed to win.

Trump has yet to acknowledge the election result.

He was quick to declare his victory even before the counting began and repeatedly complained without providing evidence that he was a victim of widespread fraud.

The poll, conducted by Reuters / Ipsos, is part of a larger poll conducted between Friday and Tuesday that included answers before the elections.

The poll showed that 70% of Americans, including 83% of Democrats and 59% of Republicans, trust that local election officials "have done their job fairly."

The poll also found that 72% believe the loser should admit defeat and 60% believe there will be a peaceful transfer of power when Trump's term ends in January.

The Reuters / Ipsos survey was conducted online across the United States.

He collected answers from 1,363 adults, including 469 who participated in the survey, from Saturday afternoon to Tuesday.

The margin of error was 5 percent.
