The Judging Department plans to update the public trial procedures and sort out the reasons for appeals of both parties according to the changes made by the Judging Department that day.

Lee Jae-yong was previously involved in the scandal of former South Korean President Park Geun-hye's "confidential political affairs". He was sued in February 2017 for facilitating the inheritance of Samsung, donating to and bribing a consortium controlled by Park Geun-hye's "best friend" Choi Sun-sil.

He was sentenced to 5 years in prison in the first instance.

In the second instance, he was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison, suspended for 4 years, and released.

In 2019, the Supreme Court of South Korea sent the case back for retrial.

On January 17, 2020, after the case was sent back for public trial for retrial, the South Korean special prosecution team applied for a change in the trial department on the grounds of "preferential trial of the defendant".

On September 18, the South Korean Grand Court (the Supreme Court) rejected the special prosecution team's application for recusal against the trial judge of Lee Jae-yong's "confidential intervening in politics" trial judge Jeong Soo-young.

On October 26, 9 months later, the Criminal Division 1 of the Seoul High Court convened the case to be sent back to the preparation date for retrial.

Lee Jae-yong did not appear in court because of the death of his father, Lee Kin-hee, the chairman of Samsung Group.
