Estonian Interior Minister Mart Helmy said today, Monday, that his questioning of the legitimacy of the result of the US presidential elections held last month cost him his post.

"I did not say anything that the American media did not actually say," said Helmy upon announcing his resignation, which sparked criticism from many of his colleagues in the political arena.

Helmy and his son Martin, who is Estonian Finance Minister, raised criticism for statements on a radio program on Sunday, in which he questioned the legitimacy of last Tuesday's elections.

The results showed former US Vice President Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump, although Trump himself also questioned the result.

Helmy also described Biden as a "corrupt figure" on the radio.

In a statement released on Sunday, Estonian President Kirsti Kaliolaid said that Helmy father and son's statements were "an attack on democracy and security in Estonia".

And she continued: "The words of a political person have weight, and today two ministers from the Republic of Estonia decided to exploit the weight of their words by attacking our main ally."
