• Historical memory.Madrid withdraws former socialist leaders Largo Caballero and Indalecio Prieto from the streets

The PSOE and the socialist municipal group in the Madrid City Council have presented a contentious-administrative appeal against the Plenary agreement that seeks to withdraw

the tributes to Indalecio Prieto and Francisco Largo Caballero

from the city

, to which is added another appeal from the UGT union .

The contentious-administrative appeal of the PSOE aims at the precautionary suspension of the Plenary agreement of last September 29

- at the proposal of Vox and with the support of the PP and Cs -

to rename the Largo Caballero and Indalecio Prieto streets and remove the statues and plates that the first, president of the Republic (1936-1937) during the Civil War, has dedicated in Madrid.

This complaint against the Consistory, in addition, is due to

"the destruction", in the opinion of the PSOE, of the plaque

in homage to Largo Caballero that, until his retirement on October 15, was on the facade of the Chamberí house where he was born .

Likewise, the Socialists appeal that the withdrawal of tributes goes against the Law of Historical Memory and the Constitution itself.

The resource that article 46 of the Constitution orders to the public powers

"the conservation and enrichment of the

historical, cultural and artistic heritage of the peoples of Spain and of the assets that comprise it, whatever their legal status and ownership is highlighted. ".

In statements sent to the press, the socialist councilor Ramón Silva has indicated that the action of the Consistory, with the support and initiative of Vox, is "inconceivable", he also denounces

the "manichean", "tortico" and "spurious" use of the Historical Memory Law

that even subverts the constitutional order.

For its part, UGT has asked the Court to adopt as a precautionary measure the suspension of the effectiveness of the Plenary Agreement, so that

the name of the streets

dedicated to Francisco Largo Caballero and Indalecio Prieto is not modified while the appeal is processed.

They have also added in a statement that they are actively working for

the preparation of a criminal complaint

for the destruction of the plaque, of "undoubted artistic and historical value", of Largo Caballero that was removed on October 15 and was on the façade of Chamberí house where he was born
