According to the trade union Kommunal Sydväst's department chair Carina Thållén, anxiety is also increasing among the staff.

- Our members are worried about whether there is enough protective equipment, partly for their own part, but above all for those you go home and visit, she says.

Staff shortage

Another concern is the workload, which increases when more routines have to be followed to avoid the spread of infection.

Should staff become ill and need to stay at home, due to covid-19 or exhaustion, there are a limited number of substitutes who can take the place of the regular staff, says Carina Thållén.

- It can be difficult to get staff with skills to go in and work at these workplaces.

Better conditions

But unlike last spring, there are now proven protective equipment and routines in place.

Carina Thållén believes that it is of the utmost importance that the staff feel safe in the workplace in order to provide good care.

- It is the employer's responsibility to ensure that the staff is protected, for the sake of both the staff and the care recipients.

According to Carina Thållén, the shortcomings that the care showed this spring have affected Kommunal's members.

- There were homes where there was no oxygen, where the covid patients could not get hospital care, all this leaves a mark on the staff.

- Hopefully they have learned something and prepared with protective equipment and organization, she says.
