Two Democratic US Congressional candidates from Delaware and Vermont made history by becoming the

first transgender legislators from their states

.

Sarah McBride

, 30, became the

first trans senator

from

Delaware

, after obtaining 86% of the vote in the first district of the state Senate, and the

United States

.

"We did. We won the general election. Thank you, thank you, thank you," he tweeted Tuesday night.

"I hope tonight shows an LGBTQ kid that our democracy is big enough for them too."

McBride hails from Wilmington, the stronghold of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

The brand new senator worked with her son, Beau, when he was state attorney general, and in the White House under Barack Obama.

Since 2013, she has been fighting gender discrimination in Delaware law.

He is currently a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the leading LGBTQ rights organization in the United States.

In 2016, McBride spoke at the Democratic Convention, becoming the

first transsexual to participate in

a major party

convention

.

The

Victory Fund

, an organization that advocates for the election of transgender people, called his victory "a powerful reminder that voters increasingly reject the policy of intolerance and favor candidates who fight for justice and equality."

According to the Victory Fund, only four transgender people have been elected in the United States.

Further north in Vermont,

Taylor Small

, 26, became the first trans elected to the House of Representatives in this state, after garnering 43% and 41% of the vote in her two districts.

"5th trans legislator in the nation!" He tweeted.

Their victories come just a few years after Democrat

Danica Roem

became the nation's first openly trans lawmaker.

Roem was elected to the Virginia State Assembly in 2017.

In 2018, Vermont Democrat

Christine Hallquist

became the first openly transgender person to be nominated for governor by a major party in the United States.
