• Elections in the US. Pro-Trump Latinos mobilize in Florida, where the president takes advantage: "We are the shock troop against communism!"

  • Results - Joe Biden takes the lead in Wisconsin and Michigan, paving the way for victory

Joe Biden has so far achieved 227 electoral votes to Donald Trump's 213 and is better positioned to reach the 270 needed to claim the electoral victory (with 98 still to be awarded in eight states).

The Democratic candidate also leads the Republican in popular vote (50.2% to 48.2%) and has all the ballots to continue increasing his advantage in the counting of votes by mail.

The process could drag on until Friday or even longer, or

be upset if Trump decides to challenge the counts before the Supreme Court, in a 'remake' of the 20-year-old battle between

George W. Bush and Al Gore

.

States where the difference between the two candidates is less than 0.5% (or 1% in some cases) are required by law to have an automatic count.

What states would Biden need to win?

Despite losing

Florida

and trailing notably behind in Pennsylvania, Biden is leading - albeit with a slight advantage - in states like Michigan and Wisconsin, where Trump beat Hillary Clinton four years ago.

The Democrat hopes to also take Arizona and possibly Nevada.

With these four states it would have to reach the 270 electoral votes necessary

.

In which states should Trump win?

The republican has it a priori more difficult.

Even winning in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia (the differences in the latter two are less than two points) and assuming that Alaska would win, Trump would remain in the 267 electoral votes.

Against him he also has the growing advantage of Biden in the count of the

votes by mail, which are being the particular rope of the Republicans against the Democrats

.

When will it be known if there is a winner?

"Frankly, we have won the election," declared President Trump on election night, fueled by his premature success in

Florida

and threatening to wage the final battle before the Supreme Court.

In Pennsylvania, the vote-by-mail count will, however, continue in principle until Friday, and in North Carolina it could take even longer.

For her part, without hiding the relative optimism in the Democratic ranks, campaign manager Jennifer O'Malley Dillon anticipated on Wednesday: "Joe Biden is on the right track to win this election and become the next president of the United States."

What can happen from now on?

The first clue is what happened in Wisconsin.

Trump's legal team has required an "immediate" recount

after the first scrutiny that gives victory to Biden by 0.6% of the vote.

Wisconsin Secretary of State Meagan Wolfe has already anticipated that the results cannot be certified until December 1.

We will have to wait.

Election day passed without incident, is there still a risk of disturbances?

Aside from his legal offensive, President Trump has threatened during the campaign with

mobilize your supporters to avoid "electoral fraud"

.

Despite the initial tensions, election day and the hours that followed passed without notable incidents.

Even if Biden officially achieved the necessary 270 electoral votes, Trump would predictably go ahead with his attempt to challenge the vote-by-mail counts.

and he would refuse to concede defeat, as is the usual practice in presidential elections.

With the caution that has characterized him during the campaign, Biden would calculate the moment to ask the president to recognize the verdict of the American people (backed by the almost three million advantage of the popular vote, very similar to that achieved four years ago by

Hillary clinton

, which nevertheless lost the electoral vote).
