What will the end-of-year celebrations look like in Europe, which is facing an acceleration of the coronavirus epidemic?

Chancellor Angela Merkel assured on Monday that Germans will be able to reunite with small families, while new restrictions have entered into force across the country for a month.

"It will be a Christmas under the conditions imposed by the coronavirus but it will not be a Christmas in loneliness (...), we must think about meetings of close family, perhaps with precautionary measures", assured the Conservative leader at a press conference in Berlin.

On the other hand, there will be "no major New Year's Eve parties," she added.

A "bearable" month of December

The German Chancellor urged the Germans to follow the new restrictions that came into effect on Monday, including the drastic reduction in contacts, for the entire month of November in order to reach "a turning point" in the fight against the pandemic.

"It is in everyone's hands to make this November our common success, (to reach) a turning point," said the leader.

"If we manage over the next four weeks to slow down (the circulation) of the virus, then we will have the conditions necessary for a bearable month of December," she added, while warning that the "light at the end of the tunnel ”was“ still quite far ”.
