The head of the Iranian Medical Council, Mohammad Reza Zafar Gandhi, questioned the accuracy of the official toll, and warned that his country had reached a catastrophic death rate.

He added, "The official number of deaths depends only on the number of patients registered through a field survey in hospitals and cemeteries, and our council obtained a number at least three times higher than the official number of deaths."

The Medical Council is a non-governmental organization responsible for granting licenses to practice doctors in Iran.
