Boko Haram jihadists killed 12 people and kidnapped seven on Sunday in an attack on a village near Chibok in northeastern Nigeria, local sources said.

Divided into six pick-up vehicles, they attacked the village of Takulashi, 18 km from Chibok, shooting at its inhabitants and burning houses.

"The terrorists killed 12 people, including two of our members who confronted them," said the leader of a local government-backed self-defense militia.

The members of this group, who came to defend the village aboard two trucks, were less numerous than the attackers who seized one of their trucks, he said.

More than 36,000 people killed

The jihadists also kidnapped seven people, "three women and their four children", and burned 70 homes after stealing food, said a community leader from Chibok.

The latter confirmed the death toll of 12.

The city of Chibok was the scene in 2014 of the spectacular kidnapping by Boko Haram of 276 schoolgirls, which caused international emotion.

57 of them were able to escape shortly after their abduction, 107 were subsequently rescued or released after negotiations, but 112 are still in captivity.

Reinforcements were sent to Chibok after these kidnappings, which did not deter Boko Haram from continuing its actions in the region.

More than 36,000 people have been killed in violence since the start of the Boko Haram insurgency in 2009 in northeast Nigeria, where more than two million people still cannot return to their homes.
