Several shots were fired Monday evening November 2 in the center of Vienna, according to the police who reported "wounded", local media evoking an attack near a major synagogue in the Austrian capital.

One of the attackers "would have died, another on the run," said the Interior Ministry, quoted by the Austrian press agency APA.

According to the same source, a police officer was also seriously injured.

"Shots fired in Innere Stadt (old town) - there are casualties - KEEP AWAY from all public places or public transport," police said on Twitter.

A witness, interviewed on a television channel, said he saw "a person running with an automatic weapon, who was shooting wildly".

Police then arrived at the scene and retaliated, with another witness reporting "at least 50 shots".

"At this stage, it is not possible to say whether the synagogue was targeted," reacted on Twitter Oskar Deutsch, president of the Jewish Community of Vienna (IKG).

More details to come.
