30 October 2020The workers of the Whirlpool of Naples have blocked the road in the area of the Gianturco district.

The protest comes after Whirlpool's CEO in Italy, La Morgia, "confirms that there is no room for continuing production in Naples", as reported by the Minister of Economic Development Stefano Patuanelli during the table with the unions.

In a letter, the company communicates to employees "the cessation of all production activities".

The protest is peaceful, from what is learned from the carabinieri.

The workers poured out onto the street after a works council during which the company's decision to close the plant was discussed.

The letter to the employees

From November 1st, production stops at the Whirlpool plant in Naples.

This was officially announced by the company, with a letter to employees explaining that from that moment the workers "will be exempted from returning to work at the site, without prejudice to the maintenance of the existing employment relationship".

"Full remuneration will be paid - it is specified - until 31 December 2020 subject to further assessments after that date".

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, at the table with the unions on Whirlpool, said he had done everything to convince the owner but the company, he explained, does not see prospects and is unable to make the Naples site competitive.

An unacceptable closure for the unions, according to which more commitment from the government is needed.
