This Friday, France entered a new period of confinement, a last resort to stop the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic.

The metropolis of Lille, particularly affected by the disease, has seen its streets empty and its shops lower their curtains as if we had gone back a few months.

But there are still some notable differences.

No one was ready when it was necessary, in mid-March, to enter confinement.

Yet at least for the first few weeks, the streets of downtown Lille were deserted, as were the roads.

But this Friday, it was quite different.

Certainly, it was not the crowds of great days and nothing compared to the day before, when one had the impression that the entire city was out to enjoy the last day of freedom.

More people on the roads and in the city

The first difference could be felt in the morning, on the roads to reach the city center of Lille.

There was a lot more traffic than last March and not just trucks.

If the morning looked like any Sunday in bad weather, we started to see more people strolling around midday.

This time, the face-to-face workers did not have to travel miles to find food.

Traders presumably learned from the first lockdown and many were already ready on that first day to sell take-out food.

Despite the confinement, some stores are still welcoming customers.

The strangest thing was all the same being able to walk around the shelves of a large multimedia store as if confinement did not exist.

As the line of customers stretched out into the street the day before, there was no one there this Friday.
