According to reports, recently, the "three-member team" for the selection of the director-general of the WTO has been conducting research and discussion on candidates.

On the afternoon of the 28th local time, WTO spokesperson Keith Rockwell announced that considering that Oconjo Iweala has gained more support, the "three-person team" decided to make him the final recommendation for the new director-general .

According to reports, the WTO will continue to discuss the selection and is expected to reach an agreement on the new director general on November 9.

After learning of this news, Okonjo-Iweara’s team expressed that they are very honored to have the support of the WTO Selection Committee.

According to previous reports, Okonjo-Iweala has won the support of the European Union, Japan and other countries, and is likely to become the first female Director-General in WTO history.

However, Rockwell also said that the United States does not support Okonjo-Iweala, but supports another candidate from South Korea, Yu Mingxi.

Rockwell also said that he is not yet clear about the reasons why the US does not support Oconjo-Iweala.

The report pointed out that this intention of the United States makes the final selection result full of uncertainty.

In May 2020, the sixth WTO Director-General Azevedo decided to leave early at the end of August.

In July, a total of 8 candidates were formally nominated and participated in the election of WTO Director-General.

After two rounds of negotiations, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Yu Mingxi entered the "finals" on October 8.
