Turkey "strongly" condemned Thursday the "savage" knife attack which killed three people in the Notre-Dame basilica in Nice.

Turkey thus suspended an escalation of tension observed with France.

"We offer our condolences to the relatives of the victims," ​​said the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

Turkey "strongly" condemned Thursday the "savage" knife attack which left at least three dead in Nice, in the south-east of France, putting aside the strong tensions between Ankara and Paris to express its "solidarity ".


"We strongly condemn the attack which was carried out today inside the Notre-Dame church in Nice (...) and offer our condolences to the relatives of the victims," ​​said the Turkish Foreign Ministry in a press release.

Turkey and France had experienced lively exchanges in recent days about the cartoons that motivated the assassin of teacher Samuel Paty.

France then criticized Ankara for not having offered its condolences immediately after the attack. 

The events took place around 9 a.m. in the Notre-Dame basilica in Nice.

According to our information, a lone man armed with a knife attacked several people inside the building, killing three people - two women and a man - according to the latest report.

One woman was beheaded, the man was killed and the second woman, seriously injured, died of her wounds in a nearby bar where she had taken refuge. 

Quickly, the national antiterrorist prosecution announced the opening of an investigation for "assassination and attempted assassination in connection with a terrorist enterprise" and "criminal terrorist association".

It has been entrusted to the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police and the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI).
