October 29, 2020Turkey "strongly condemns the savage attack" in the cathedral of Nice.

This was announced by the Turkish Foreign Ministry which expressed its solidarity with France.

"We strongly condemn the attack carried out today inside the Notre-Dame church in Nice and we offer our condolences to the relatives of the victims," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

"It is clear that those who have committed such a savage attack on a sacred place of worship cannot be inspired by any religious, human or moral spirit," added the note from the Turkish Foreign Ministry, expressing "solidarity with the French in front of to terrorism and violence ".

The attack comes nearly two weeks after the murder in France of a teacher who was targeted for the presentation in class of the cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in a lesson on free speech.

During a ceremony in honor of this teacher, President Emmanuel Macron defended the right to publish these cartoons, sparking a wave of anger in the Muslim world where anti-French proclamations and boycotts have multiplied.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has violently attacked Macron in recent days, accusing him of waging a "hate campaign" against Islam and questioning his "state of mental health".

In reaction, France recalled its ambassador to Ankara, further escalating the tension until an appeal launched last Monday by Erdogan asking for a boycott of French brands.
