In North Carolina, which the American press has dubbed "the most uncertain of the key states", the American election is far from over.

On the one hand, young people are mobilizing en masse for Joe Biden, in particular through early voting.

On the other hand, Republicans are trying to rally older residents of rural areas of the state.

REPORTAGE

Until Tuesday, November 3, American election day, Europe 1 takes you to the United States with a daily report.

This Wednesday, meet on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

The vote of young Americans promises to be crucial.

In North Carolina, more than 200,000 voters under the age of 30 have already voted for Joe Biden or Donald Trump, eight times more than four years ago at the same stage.

On the campus of the University of this "swing state" in the southeast of the United States, the vast majority of students have already returned their report card.

"2016 was like a wake-up call"

"It just seems more important to us than 4 years ago. 2016 has been like a wake-up call for many, like a reminder that our vote really matters. And that if we don't use it, it has consequences", says Peyton, who is finishing medical school.

Such a momentum was not, however, obvious.

Here as elsewhere, the courses are held 100% online.

The campus is almost empty due to the pandemic.

The parties were unable to carry out their usual campaign aimed at registering these young people on the electoral rolls.

"We tried to get by by working online," said the president of the university's Young Democrats, however.

"I have received texts, emails and phone calls from the Biden campaign to remind me to vote, with links to register on the Internet. For me, the subject of Covid is the most important", Bronwyn explains.

Her friend Grace added: "For me, it's gender equality, racial equality and universal health coverage. A lot has to change, and Joe Biden is the best alternative."

A record number of registrations on the Republican side

Thanks to these young people who vote mainly on the left, the Democrats dream of winning North Carolina, which has eluded them since 2008. But it is not sure that this mobilization is enough.

Opposite, the Republicans also record registration records on the lists.

This time, it is about older voters, living in more rural areas.

Sarah Reidy-Jones, party activist in the west of the state, travels almost every day to try to convince them.

"We continue door to door, we go to the subdivisions. Because indeed we cannot stay seated at home, we have to go look for people, that's what will make the difference. The last time, the The election was played with two people per constituency. If we win two voters in each place, we can tip the state. "

Nothing has yet been decided in this region that the American press has dubbed "the most uncertain of the key states".
