  According to reports, the subject of the survey was 5,700 Japanese citizens over the age of 20. The results showed that the average smoking rate for men and women was 16.7%, which was 1.1% lower than the previous survey and the lowest since the survey was conducted in 1986.

  In terms of the ratio of males to females, the smoking rate of men is 27.1% and that of women is 7.6%. The smoking rate of men is much higher than that of women.

However, in the past 10 years, the smoking rate among men in the country has dropped by 11.1%, and women have dropped by 3.3%.

  Regarding the survey results, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare stated that the Japanese government plans to achieve the goal of reducing the smoking rate to below 12% in 2022.
