The popular market with thousands of visitors from all over the world, and who survived the Spanish flu in the early 20th century, must now give way to the corona pandemic.

During Wednesday's extra-ordinary municipal board meeting, the decision was made to cancel next year's edition of Jokkmokk's market.

- During the current pandemic, the regulations apply that you may not have more than 50 people gathered in the same event.

These 50 people include both market vendors and visitors.

It is not possible to divide the event into several small ones, says Monika Lundkvist.

Therefore, the decision was made

In normal cases, almost 5,000 people live in Jokkmokk, but during market days the municipality receives around 45,000 visitors.

According to the municipal council, there have been meetings, local contractors and the Norrbotten Region's infection control as a basis for the decision.

The idea was that the winter market, which has been arranged since 1605, would take place 4-6 February next year with inauguration the day before.

But the 416th order will not end.
